When installing flooring, you need sturdy hardwood flooring nails and hardware to make sure they stay in place. We have a wide variety of nails and tools from the best manufacturers around. You’ll find everything you need to get the job done right at Indiana Floor.
Flooring Nails
Most manufacturers allow flooring nails or staples for wood flooring installation, but you should always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper nail/staple size for a specific solid or engineered wood floor. We recommend nailing or stapling every 6-8 inches along the tongue of every board and staying approximately 4 inches from each end of the floorboard.
Cleat Nails
Cleat nails are designed and cut specifically for the installation of wood flooring. When the flooring or subflooring shrinks or swells from season to season, the ribs or barbs engage the wood fibers and thus increase the resistance to withdrawal.
Cleats typically have serrated edges for better wood grip. These fasteners are driven at a 45-degree angle through the tongue of each hardwood plank, securing it to the subfloor. Cleat nails are known for their strength and holding power. Certain types of cleats are designed for more flexibility, offering increased pliancy and reduced susceptibility to breakage due to contraction and expansion of the hardwood flooring.
Staples
Staples are a common choice for securing hardwood flooring. Their flat surface area provides good holding power. Initially, hardwood floor installers relied on manual stapling tools, which were labor-intensive and time-consuming. However, the introduction of pneumatic staplers in the mid-20th century revolutionized the industry, offering a faster and more efficient method for installing hardwood. Beyond wood flooring, staples also find application in other types of flooring, including engineered wood and even resilient flooring materials, contributing to the overall durability and longevity of the floor.
Additional Hardware for Your Hardwood Flooring Installation
Wood flooring installation requires specific tools to ensure a professional and successful result. Some common wood flooring tools include a flooring nailer or stapler for securing the wood planks to the subfloor, a miter saw or circular saw for making accurate cuts, a pry bar or pull bar for fitting planks together, a tapping block or rubber mallets for guiding planks into place, a moisture meter for checking wood moisture levels, a level for ensuring a flat and even installation, a measuring tape for accurate measurements, and a pencil or marker for marking guidelines.
Additionally, depending on the specific installation method and requirements of your wood flooring project, you may also need wood filler, wood putty, or wood adhesive.
