What is Unfinished Wood Flooring?

Unlike prefinished wood flooring, unfinished wood flooring isn’t sanded and finished when it arrives at your home. Unfinished wood flooring is better if you install floors throughout the house. It presents a more consistent, even color and finish. If you are looking for a new floor to match your existing flooring or trim, unfinished wood floors allow for more customized staining options since they don’t come pre-stained.

Unfinished wood flooring needs to be sanded, stained, and sealed after installation. This extends the length of the installation process, so you won’t be able to access certain areas of your home for a while.

Benefits of Unfinished Wood Flooring

There are several benefits of choosing unfinished wood flooring over prefinished options.

  • Customization: One of the most significant advantages of unfinished wood flooring is its freedom in terms of finish. You might have a specific vision for your floors that a seller might not offer. In this case, the unfinished variety allows you to bring your ideas to fruition.
  • Cost-Effective: Unfinished wood flooring is often available at a lower price point than its prefinished counterpart. You can save a considerable sum if you’re willing to put in some extra work later.
  • Protection During Building Work: Unfinished wood is a smart choice for those undergoing building work and concerned about potential damage to newly installed flooring. Any scrapes or damages incurred can be addressed when the final finish is applied.
  • Rustic Appeal: If you’re seeking a rustic, natural aesthetic, the raw, unfinished look of the wood can be a design feature. This is perfect for spaces where showcasing the authentic look and feel of the wood is preferred.

Subfloor Moisture Preparation

The subfloor moisture content should be 4% of the wood flooring. Use a dehumidifier or heating unit to reduce moisture. All moisture testing must be before wood has been acclimated 72 hours. Ensure that the subfloor is dry within a specific moisture content.

How to Measure a Room for Flooring Installation

Determine the square footage of each room where you want to install floors. Use a tape measure to measure the room’s length and width. Then, multiply the length by the width to get your square footage. Add 10% to the square footage to accommodate cuts and waste. When measuring for Luxury Vinyl Plank, Solid Hardwood, or Engineered Hardwood, you should add 5% – 8% extra for required cuts.
